Winter is slowly ending and spring is starting. Small flowers are appearing on our lawns, and the animals are getting skippy with spring fever. The best part about this slow awakening of the new season is that it gives us just enough time to decide what we want to plant in our gardens for the summer. While we farm around 500 lavender plants, we also have personal gardens that are really just for fun. I put my efforts into herbs, tomatoes, different kinds of peppers, and of course my favorite rhubarb that comes back each season. Farmer Matthew loads up his gardens with tomatoes, basil, and zucchini. Shepherdess Jeri tends to her flowers and fruit trees; the cherry tree produced wonderfully last year, and we hope for more again this season!

Part of spring garden planning also involves looking at the soil. Matthew and I both operate with raised garden beds, and each season the question of “did I compost enough into them over winter?” comes into play.

To ensure that our garden beds have the best chance for success, especially in the hot summer days of Central PA, we like to mix in some of our Wool Fertilizer Pellets to the garden beds! They help increase porosity of the soil to limit how much watering we need to do. They are also full of soil amending elements that give your garden some pep. Our wool fertilizer pellets are made with the waste wool that comes from our yarn farm, that is mixed and pelletized with manure from sheep, goats, alpacas, and horses. They’re an amazingly local and sustainable option for those that are looking to amend their soil before they dive into planting.

What plans do you have for your garden this year?
